When Fear Becomes Faith: Fr. Groeschel on Childhood Wounds, Trust, and Prophetic Living

Your fear has roots. Your faith can have wings.

What if your difficulty trusting God began long before you understood what trust was? Fr. Benedict Groeschel — one of the most beloved Catholic psychologists of our time — explores the childhood roots of fear, the saints who found their way through, and what it looks like to arrive at genuine surrender. Three lessons. Real tradition.

About this course

Most of us know, in the abstract, that we are supposed to trust God. Most of us also know that trust does not come easily — that something in us resists the surrender, holds back from the peace that faith promises. Fr. Benedict Groeschel, Franciscan Friar of the Renewal and licensed clinical psychologist, spent fifty years sitting with people in exactly this place. He knew where the resistance came from.

This course is built from one of his most candid teaching sessions — a pastoral seminar in which he speaks with the directness of someone who has accompanied thousands of people from the roots of their fear toward the practice of trust. He traces fear to its sources: the childhood home marked by economic anxiety, conflict, or loss; the war and violence that reshape a generation's capacity to depend on anything; the gradual calcification of the heart that happens when the world proves unreliable too many times.

He then introduces the tradition: the saints and spiritual writers who show that this journey — from wounded child to trusting soul — has been made before, and made fully. St. Faustina. St. Thérèse. Julian of Norwich. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Cooke. Each of them carried their fear into the hands of a God they had learned — slowly, painfully, honestly — to trust.

Across three lessons, the course moves through the full arc of this journey: The roots of fear and the witnesses who show us the way forward; The loneliness, anger, and honest doubt that the journey passes through; The denial that blocks the view, the prophetic courage that clears it, and the providence in which the whole journey is held.

Whether you come as a pastoral minister, a mental health counselor, a spiritual director, or simply an adult Catholic who has been carrying something too heavy for too long — this course is for you.

Who this course is for

Catholic Adults in Formation

Adult Catholics seeking deeper spiritual understanding; may be in a parish program, on retreat, or exploring formation independently.

Your fear is not a spiritual failure. It has a history — and a way through. Fr. Groeschel is one of the few guides who can show you both.

Mental Health Counselors and Therapists (NBCC audience)

Licensed mental health professionals seeking continuing education that integrates faith and psychology; may be Catholic or working with religious clients.

2.5 NBCC CE clock hours in Human Growth and Development and Counseling Theory. A Catholic psychologist's framework for understanding how childhood fear affects adult spiritual capacity — and how the pastoral tradition offers resources for healing.

Seminarians and Pastoral Ministers

Those in formation for priesthood, diaconate, or lay ministry; seeking psychological and spiritual tools for accompaniment.

Before you can accompany others through their fear, you need to understand your own. Fr. Groeschel teaches both — with the candor of someone who has been in the room with thousands of suffering people.

Spiritual Directors

People who accompany others in spiritual direction, seeking resources that integrate psychology and spirituality.

The saints who modeled trust were not people without fear. They were people who knew what to do with it. This course gives you their tradition — and the psychological framework to understand why it works.
