The Relational Laboratory: How Groups Heal What Individual Work Cannot

Why groups? Dr. Harvey Payne puts the question to Gabriel Dy-Liacco, and the answer reframes group work entirely. A group is not several therapies in one room — it is a shared relational field that offers hope, trust, and the end of isolation, and a good leader learns to use it on purpose.

About this course

Picture the difference between two rooms. In one, a counselor sits with a single client and, at the end of the hour, hopes the client will go out and try what they practiced with the people in their life. In the other, the people are already there. That is the shift this course is about.

Dr. Harvey Payne asks Gabriel Dy-Liacco a question counselors rarely say out loud: why groups, when we could just see people one at a time? Dy-Liacco’s answer is that when people relate in a group, they create something that is more than the sum of them — a relational dynamic with its own healing power. It offers what a two-person relationship cannot: the installation of hope as members watch change happen, the formation of trust in a room made safe, and the relief of being “no longer isolated, but more a part of the human race.” Payne names the group a “relational laboratory,” a place to practice being human where mistakes do not end in exile — and Dy-Liacco grounds the whole thing in a conviction as old as the Church: we find our meaning in relationship because we are made in the image of a God who is himself a relationship.
