The Healing Relationship: Human Relating Skills for Spiritual Direction

Learning to listen, to stay present, and to speak a hard word with love is not the private property of therapy. It is older and deeper than that, drawn from human wisdom and the Catholic tradition, and Christ himself is its model.

About this course

Why would a program in spiritual direction teach skills that sound like they belong in a counseling office? Because learning to listen, to stay present, and to speak a hard word with love is not the private property of therapy. It is older and deeper than that, drawn from human wisdom and the Catholic tradition, and Christ himself is its model.

In this short, richly grounded lesson, three Divine Mercy University faculty members show why the relationship between director and directee is not the setting for healing but its very means. You will learn what it takes to create a place safe enough for honesty, what "being with and for" another person really asks of you, and how trust makes it possible to receive a challenge as love rather than as threat.

Grounded in Scripture, the spiritual masters, and DMU's Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person.

You will leave able to: name why these skills belong in spiritual direction; recognize how a relationship heals; and see how safety and challenge work together in accompaniment.
