Someone to Walk With: The Everyday Benefits of Spiritual Direction

You already suspect it would help. You’re also sure you don’t have time. This course is built around a man who thought the same — until he’d spent four years in monthly spiritual direction and couldn’t imagine deciding anything without it. Watch his story, see what actually changed in his prayer, his family, and his work, and learn from DMU scholarship and the classic spiritual writers what makes accompaniment work.

About this course

Most people who resist spiritual direction say the same thing: I don’t have the time. This short course answers that objection with a real story. Greg Dyer runs a company, raises five children, helps care for an aging mother — and has gone to spiritual direction every month for more than four years. In a candid interview he explains how it started, why he keeps going when his calendar is already full, and what has actually changed: how he prays, how he handles his family and his employees, and how direction quietly brought him back to regular Confession.

Built around that interview, the course draws on Divine Mercy University scholarship and the classic spiritual writers to show what makes accompaniment work — attentive listening, meeting a person where they are, and the freedom to grow at the pace God sets. It is written for two kinds of learners at once: Catholic adults who want to understand what spiritual direction could offer them, and counselors and pastoral caregivers who want to sharpen how they use themselves in a helping relationship.

Who this course is for

Catholic adults

Lead with the story and the payoff in daily life — calmer decisions, a reframed relationship, a way back to Confession.

Counselors and pastoral professionals

Lead with the credential and the competency — 1.0 NBCC clock hour in Helping Relationships, with material on the therapeutic alliance, attachment-informed use of self, whole-person conceptualization, and clinician self-care.

Common questions

I don’t have time.
Don’t argue with it; reframe the unit and the stakes. One hour a month, and the real cost is a year of deciding everything alone. This is the course’s home turf — the whole video is the rebuttal.
Isn’t that just for priests and really holy people?
The “everyday” framing and Greg’s very ordinary profile answer this before it’s asked. Keep a layman, not a cleric, at the center of every image and headline.
