Presence Over Platitudes: Human Relating Skills for Accompanying Suffering

When someone asks "Where is God?", most helpers reach for a reason. In one hour, learn to reach for presence instead.

A grieving father whose child may not survive asks his spiritual director where God is. Watch a competent, well-meaning director lose him, moment by moment, and learn what genuine accompaniment would have looked like. One hour of NBCC continuing education on the skill no technique can replace: staying.

About this course

The wrong response to a grieving person can push them out of your care for good. In one hour, learn the moves that keep them with you.

You already know not to say 'everything happens for a reason.' This is about the subtler ways good helpers still lose people.

Who this course is for

Counselors and directors

Counselors and directors do not want a course. They want to stop dreading the conversation where someone hands them their worst fear.

From the course syllabus

Every counselor and spiritual director eventually sits across from someone who asks the question that has no clean answer: Where is God in this? A parent whose child is dying. A person whose prayers seem to have gone unanswered for years. In those moments the instinct to reassure, to reframe, to find the silver lining is strong, and it is often exactly what pushes the suffering person further into their loneliness.

This course teaches the harder skill: staying. Using a single unscripted spiritual-direction conversation as a live case, you will study, moment by moment, how a well-meaning director loses a grieving father, and what genuine accompaniment would have looked like instead. It is one hour that will change how you handle the next hard conversation you walk into.

Grounded in Divine Mercy University’s Catholic Christian Meta-Model of the Person and in the spiritual masters of suffering, John of the Cross, Ignatius, von Speyr, and Sheen, the course names the difference between presence and platitude, between receiving pain and explaining it away.
