Practicing Virtue: Helping Clients Turn Insight Into Lasting Change

A Catholic-Christian approach to character, self-control, and human flourishing for the helping professions.

Most clients already know what they should do. Knowing has not been enough. In this 45-minute, CE-bearing lesson, psychologist Paul Vitz reframes virtue as a performing art (something practiced, not just understood) and shows counselors how to move a client from insight to rehearsal. Grounded in DMU’s Catholic Christian Meta-Model and the Christian spiritual tradition, it gives you one clear principle you can use in your next session.

About this course

Most clients already know what they should do. Knowing has not been enough. In this focused lesson, psychologist Paul Vitz makes a deceptively simple case: virtue is not something you understand, it is something you practice, a performing art closer to music or athletics than to a true-or-false quiz. Courage, responsibility, and self-control become real only when they are done, repeatedly, until the doing reshapes the person.

For counselors and pastoral care providers, that reframes the work. Naming a missing virtue is the easy part. This course shows how to move a client from insight to rehearsal, and it sets Vitz’s practical wisdom inside a richer frame: the science of habit formation, Craig Titus’s three dimensions of virtue, and the Catholic-Christian conviction that grace builds on the effort we bring. You will leave with a working principle you can use on Monday morning — to help someone change, help them practice, and know what the practice is for.
