I don’t know how to help, and I’m afraid I’m making it worse.
About this course
If someone you love has PTSD, you’ve probably watched them struggle and felt like there was nothing you could do. There is.
In this free, 40-minute lesson, you’ll hear from Dr. Frank Ochberg — one of the psychiatrists who helped define PTSD — and trauma psychologist Dr. Angela Panos. In plain language, they explain what PTSD actually is, the simple things that genuinely help (and a few that don’t), how to talk with your loved one before the hard moments, and how to keep yourself from burning out. You don’t need any medical background. You just need to care, which you already do.
You’ll come away understanding what your loved one is going through — and knowing that your steady presence is one of the most powerful things in their recovery.
Who this course is for
Spouses, parents, adult children, close friends, and coworkers of people with PTSD (families of veterans; loved ones of survivors of assault, abuse, accidents, and disasters)
What they want is not information for its own sake. They want to stop feeling powerless.
Also for Parish communities and support groups.
From the course syllabus
If someone you love has PTSD, you have probably felt helpless — watching them struggle and not knowing whether to step in or step back. This short, plain-language course is for you: spouses, parents, adult children, friends, and anyone who wants to help. You need no medical background.
Built on a Gift from Within program featuring Dr. Frank Ochberg, one of the psychiatrists who helped write the original definition of PTSD, and veteran trauma psychologist Dr. Angelea Panos, the lesson explains what PTSD actually is, what you can do that genuinely helps, what to avoid, and how to keep yourself steady through a long recovery. Its central message is simple and hopeful: you are not on the sidelines of your loved one’s healing. With understanding, you can become part of the cure.
