About this course
Hatred is not simply a moral failure. It is, in many cases, a psychological achievement — one that delivers power, clarity, identity, community, and energy to the person who cannot yet find those things through love. Until pastoral workers and counselors understand what hatred is delivering, any approach to forgiveness will be met with resistance that cannot be overcome by exhortation alone.
In this course, Dr. Paul Vitz — one of the founding figures of Catholic psychology in America and a senior scholar at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences — presents a framework that is simultaneously psychological in precision and theological in depth. Drawing on Melanie Klein’s object relations theory, he traces how the infant’s earliest developmental experiences give rise to the mechanism of splitting — the failure to integrate the “good” and “bad” representations of another person into a whole — and how this mechanism is the psychological substructure of adult hatred.
Across three lessons, the course moves from developmental theory (the roots of splitting and the depressive position) through an analysis of hatred’s “payoffs” and the definition of forgiveness as a decision of the will, to pastoral application — including the psychology of self-hatred and the role of the pastoral minister as the one who embodies, in the power of grace, the unconditional regard that broken persons have never received from a human being.
What you will gain:
- A Kleinian-Catholic framework for understanding the developmental roots of adult hatred
- A clinically precise and theologically grounded definition of forgiveness
- A three-part typology of self-hatred and the pastoral/therapeutic response to each
